It took longer than expected, but the AOMedia Video Codec 1.0 (AV1) bitstream format is released (edit: not claimed to be "finally frozen").

Now it's time to to develop a optimized AV1 encoder/decoder. I wouldn't bet on a 1.0 version before 2019. Currently there's the non optimized reference software decoder and encoder (libaom), which is in my opinion only suitable for testing purpose (available in ffmpeg git builds, if anybody is interested).
