You can already download partial database exports here. I'll make a full final dump once updates stop.
I'm looking to see what I can do with code releases. Some stuff is already available here.

Do the admins have full time jobs, families, a life away from the computer screen?
I have personal income sources and not many responsibilities outside of AT.How much time does it take to answer people's questions and help with problems day after day?
In general, not a lot, and there's quite a number of days where I don't post at all. A lot of questions actually get answered by others here.OHNO ;( I just found your site late last year :/ Hate to go back to Nyaa, which is a mess and you were the only quality indexer with primo AV1 releases.
I see the work you had to pour into this and I know for a fact it took a toll on you, even if it's part of your heart.
From the deepest of my heart - THANK YOU! <3

The cost of hosting this site is probably less than 2% of the admin salary, the average European salary. As the admin said, this website is very cheap, but the time spent is very long is this hobby.
It's amazing how dumb people really are. 15 years of running this site out of pocket... I believe... since I never really saw a donation link like a lot of other sites have. Do the admins have full time jobs, families, a life away from the computer screen? - (horror stories for most of the people who come here) It's always me me me and not them. How much time does it take to answer people's questions and help with problems day after day? - (not counting the trolling, spamming, and flame wars) As a downloader I thank the people who took the time to give us these uploads and thank Anime Tosho for making them available in an easy and organized way. You guys will be missed.
Make your API, database and other resources publicly avaliable and open source.
I'll try to release all the backend scripts during the coming months, but for your question, the general gist is something like:
- run
- run
There may be a few special cases to consider (like Vobsub being two files), but that's about it.
- run
mkvmerge --identify --identification-format json [filename] - this will give you a list of everything with related info- run
mkvextract [func] [filename] where [func] is attachments/tracks/tags/chapters. For attachments/tracks you'll need to build the relevant command from the identify output aboveThere may be a few special cases to consider (like Vobsub being two files), but that's about it.
Hi Admin, thank you for your great service over all these years and good luck in the future adventures :)
Could you please show an example script on how to get all the subs, chapters, tags and attachments from a specific release in a neat "animetosho-7z" style? I assume you use mkvextract, mkvinfo and... what else? Can't figure out how to get subtitle file names in language-tagged "track3.eng.ass" format. Would be so great to continue stacking up attachments in a good-old-familiar way after The_Black_Day comes...

They need to make their data and API public.
And now the admin is killing the site and betraying the anime piracy community.
Anime Tosho's quality as a site is unmatched. Think of this as one stop shop where everything is available through one site. I mean how awesome is that. Still, I'm very sad to see this go but I'm really grateful because this site exists. Godspeed, admin.
As an encoder that made countless releases thanks to the subs AnimeTosho made more easily available to everyone, I'm very grateful for everything you did and the quality of the service for so many years. We will be missing you, many thanks again and hope your next adventure is a good one too!
Not managed by me, but here's a site where users share subtitles: https://kitsunekko.net/
I'm with you on not liking their API (or their general stance on aggressively protecting "their" data).
I don't intend to antagonise anyone though (and my releasing a scraped copy of AniDB might make them more aggressive with restrictions).
If someone wishes make some publicly accessible DB dump of AniDB, there's nothing really stopping them other than the effort required.

Thanks for your thoughts, the idea of shutting down some parts has crossed my mind, but I don't think it'd work out.
As far as backend processing goes, most of it actually runs itself. What probably takes the most effort maintaining would actually be the AniDB tagger (people come up with new naming schemes, AniDB lacks aliases people use, people debate on which season of Demon Slayer to label, fixing up mislabelled stuff etc). Stuff like retrying uploads has mostly been automated, so I only need to keep an eye on it.
There's some degree of unpredictability that goes with managing services like these, e.g. a disk dies, DB corrupts itself, some AI bot goes crazy scraping things consuming lots of resources etc. Average workload might be low, but these events can throw a wench in if you had planned your time otherwise. Other stuff includes keeping on top of relevant news/comments, maintaining opsec etc.
Unfortunately a lot of this can't really be eliminated by getting rid of parts of the system.
There's also the me factor - as long as AT is around, I'd feel compelled to improve things. So I think I just need to walk away from it entirely.

Thank you for everything you've done over the past few years!
If I may ask, not sure if this is the proper place, is there even anything close to AT out there that I could use?
I generally prefer to avoid doing things others already do, so I've often directed AT into niches no-one else covered, and thus don't really know much about alternatives unfortunately.I've seem some aspects of what AT does appear over the years, like there have been sites offering DDLs, and there was someone who used to mirror a lot of stuff onto Usenet.
I once recall seeing a site which did screenshots of a lot of new torrents. Unfortunately I've never seen anyone attempt to extract mediainfo or subtitles (which is surprising given that it isn't hard to do).
But maybe others know better than I do.
what anime is the little octo/tako guy from your avatar from?
When searching for a link, I noticed that this site has it as its icon: https://oreimo.fandom.com/wiki/Main_PageCan't you leave someone as the main admin to keep the website alive? And if not, why...?
I'm the only person who manages the servers, so there's no "other admin" here.If someone wants to make an AT-like service, there's nothing really stopping them, other than having to develop a system for it to happen. If I release the code, it may help, assuming someone is enthusiastic enough to make sense of it all.
I'm not sure what you're asking for - could you clarify?
The updates script uses Nyaa's RSS feed to discover new entries to process.

Thanks for the usenet posts. Hopefully they're going to serve us for years to come.
Japan has never made 38 billion on anime sales and fees outside the country in a year, so the loss figure is just an estimate / guesstimate.
Thanks for running this site for 15 years admin. Can't imagine doing something this long for free(?). I don't remember how much but i think you've always fetched skipped stuff i requested in the comments.
I haven't really used the site for downloading episodes/movies for some years now. I usually visit just to check mediainfo and download subtitles occassionally. Guess i'll miss those 2... don't know any other site that provides them.

Admin, I want to thank you for all that you've done. I can't imagine the burden it must've been on your cognitive load to maintain a site like this for 15 years. I hope that your mind will finally be free to move on to whatever you want to do next now that you've committed to letting this site go.
This site has been part of my life since 2012 and checking it has provided me comfort through hard times. I wish you happiness now and in the days to come. You're a legend!

Japan's anime industry has been severely impacted by piracy, with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) reporting a staggering loss of $38 billion in 2025 due to anime piracy. This figure represents a threefold increase from the previous year, highlighting the growing threat of piracy to the industry. The report, based on a consumer survey conducted across Japan, China, Vietnam, France, the United States, and Brazil, underscores the increasing popularity of anime and manga globally, which has led to a surge in demand for pirated content.
Feel proud of yourselves, everybody. We made this happen !

Tosho Admin fucking us over. Poor shame. A spit in the face to all the pirates who kept this site alive.
Thanks for running this site for so long, Admin. You made DDL possible for countless anons with a simple and easy to use site. Best feature is no javascript required. For that alone you deserve a Hero of teh Internets medal.
No idea what I'll do after AT shuts down. I can only hope an alternative becomes available.

As other have already I add my thanks to the admin, AT was part of my daily routine for more than a decade and while I am sad to see it go and would love to have somebody take over, I am still happy that you quit on your own terms and not because you are forced to.
All the best for your future endeavor you will be missed.

Thanks for running this over the years. I've used it on several occasions to help salvage old, otherwise unarchived releases to reupload elsewhere. The site's undoubtedly helped preserve at least a few entire anime series that I know of.
Thanks for all you've done admin. Providing a final database like that shows what a class act you are!
Thank You for turning your hobby into sharing with others.
I understand why you decided on a clean break as an ending, even as I wish for an unrealistic alternative.
I came across Your site as anime for profit sites used fansubs groups output to fund their destruction, then attack free net viewing sites. We have come full circle now that sub groups rip directly from the pay to view that killed them.
Last nights hunt for alternate non torrent sources for downloads just made me more thankful for your tremendous contribution to helping me enjoy anime.

Thank you so much for the decade+ of such an unbelievable resource. Like an oasis in the desert that could be tapped. I hope the best for you.
If I may ask, not sure if this is the proper place, is there even anything close to AT out there that I could use? This place was so simple and powerful, I imagine there isn't anything up to the standard, but something to get my weeklies would be fantastic. TY

From the bottom of my heart thank you for all that you've done. I wish you the best in your endeavors and hope you have a deep found joy in your life for all the days to come.
All good things must come to an end. I've been enjoying the nzb posting for some years now since I moved back to primarily using Usenet. A lot of anime on Usenet is probably from this site which is probably the best long term access to files as torrents can rapidly die. I'm sure others will take up a similar mantle, at least for the usenet component. I have downloaded articles, its a pain and most applications just collapse under downloading nearly a terabyte of headers. (I was/semi-actively looking for some of the oldest fansubs on Usenet).
Hopefully a few request (none planned right now) can be filled to age in the future of these files.
I wish you the best.

Thank you so much for taking care of this site during all these years! It worked so reliably and smoothly that I tend to forget that it must have had to take lots of effort to make it work well.
I liked that the frontend stayed simple and "no BS" all this time despite the trends and fads (mobile-first, excessive use of javascript, ads, no compact design, wasted space) that went on everywhere else.
I also especially appreciated being able to download the subtitles of episodes in other languages or for unseeded torrents.
I wish you all the best in the future and with a load off your mind afterwards.

It seems pretty clear you've put a lot of thought into this decision just as it seems clear you put a ton of blood, sweat and tears into this site!
Considering the significant chunk of your life spent nurturing this place, it's pretty obvious that it has meant a lot to you as well!
Like a bunch of folks have already explained this site has been an insane resource on many fronts. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Now, as I glumly go forth and consider the reality of an animetosho-less future, you have my utmost gratitude, admin.
I'm getting a little panicky thinking about it but thank you so much conceiving, building and actively maintaining it for so long!
As much as an orderly hand off of the site would be awesome, I can think of quite a few reasons why wouldn't make sense for this place. It is unheard of to host an unmonetized anime piracy platform, especially considering maintaining it does take time and money. Handing over the ~15 yr over would need a whole lot of trust, for someone like me at least.
Anyways, thanks so much admin! I've got a ton of respect for you, you've carried yourself with aplomb, a gentleman and a scholar if you will.
admin, you're a legend, enjoy the unexpected new adventures the future brings and also the ones you plan and execute on your own!
Cheers, so long, and thanks for all the fish/shoes!
p.s. I'm sure it's already been brought up or it's super obvious, but what anime is the little octo/tako guy from your avatar from?

God damn, years of fully automated 0 click torrenting have been powered by tosho for me, it must have saved me months of my lifetime just thanks to the API, Godspeed Señor Tosho, you'll be missed
Thank you very much for your time working on AT. I've been relying on your usenet uploads for many years now, and it's going to be rough going to something else - but I understand why moving on could be better for you and there's no ill will here. I hope it can remove a stress from your life.
Thanks for everything. Hugely appreciate having a cleaner layout such as this (I only use it for torrents, but find it easier to navigate for weekly usage than any alternative I've tried).
I wish you a clean transition and all the best for the road ahead.

I really thank you for your dedication, admin.
I will definitely miss AT.

I've been using this website for about 10 years. It's been a great help in many cases. Finding the best quality releases without your screenshots wouldn't have been possible. Being able to download the subtitles (in order to translate to my own language) was quite a feature. This was my haven for real.
I deeply thank you and wish you the best for the rest of the journey of life you have ahead of you.
I can't help but ask... Can't you leave someone as the main admin to keep the website alive? And if not, why...? I'm quite curious. :D

Before animetosho, there was a similar site to animetosho called otakucop existed before 2012, But the difference is otakucop, hosts own files.
