I saw an recent article in a major publication that focused on the bombings from a western viewpoint, the creation of the bombs, the naming of them, the planes used, and the backups and so on. All very exiting and interesting from a barbaric beurocratic killing machines perspective I'm sure.

I think its the same across the NATO styled alliance nations, but almost all smaller independent countries, and the Brics also (Brazil, Russia, India, China, etc) have a set remembrance day each year honouring the dead of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was a hell of an event in human history, and it is a quite a big deal for a very large part of the world, annually.

But for those of us from  UK, USA, Germany, France etc, well most of us grew up not giving a single thought to Hiroshima and Nagasaki day, and if we did, we learned of it from a non establishment source, certainly not school or state media.

Or how about a day of remembrance for the dead Africans at the hands of the Africans rebels invading towns nonstopped raping women and children, chopping people up, burning the towns down after killing everyone gruesomely except for the few that are forced to join them or die.

Most people want to bitch about what they want but would rather just sit on their asses and do nothing.

I I thought of this thread when I was rewatching some Non Non Biyori yesterday. The Dropping of the Atomic Bombs were in August, height of the summer, there would have been kids in Nagasaki and Hiroshima, just like Hotaru, Konomi, Natsumi and Renge, all running around enjoying their summer break. Then Boom, gone in an instant, hundreds of thousands of people. Everything.

Like you say...The technical details given in any and all western articles and documentaries on the event, "All very exiting and interesting from a barbaric beurocratic killing machines perspective"

From a human perspective it is appalling.

It's a sad fact that Western mass media shape (at least) Western people's opinions on many (or every?) issues by bombarding them with their own interpretation of news and instilling their views and stories in the public mind by repetition and more importantly by highlighting some news while downplaying and understating other (more important) news which isn't in their interest.

An example among many others is HBO's Chernobyl. While the total direct deaths caused by the Chernobyl accident is only 60, they've produced a highly publicized 5-episode series to slam and blame Soviet Union administration. But has there been any movies or series (like Chernobyl) that deal with the atomic bombings of Japan by the US (with the consent of the UK) which resulted in direct death toll of at least 220,000 people?! 😔

Say what you will but they started it when the U.S. minding their own business and completely staying out of the war. Sure nukes were wrong but blame is on both sides. Japan was far from the peace loving country it is today. Maybe read up on some history as to why China and Korea fiercely hate the Japanese from actions all the way to the mid 20th century. No one likes war but I hate dumbasses who act like it was one sided.

The Soviet Union has been far from great either. Notorious for starving their masses while the rich and government ate like kings. Especially in the cold war. Not as bad as North Korea but the point is communism has a lot of issues too. There is no perfect government.

This has been a good few posts, I cannot see the 'Harping on' you refer to, I do see some showing of respects and people expressing themselves in a way that can be viewed as trying to learn from the past.

Why do people feel the need to tell others to 'Move on' all the time anyway? Who has the right to do that? What should they move along to? A world were we quickly forget things like this because it's too painful? Too inconvenient? Too boring for some?

People can take as long as they like with these things in my opinion, and the more time spent pondering these things might result in less of this kind of thing happening in the future

The point here isn't to defend Soviet Union government or communism, or blaming (Western) people who are only followers.
The point is to alarm people to be less ignorant and more aware of the facts of the world and mechanism of propaganda.

US economic hegemony has been challenged significantly in the past decade but its hegemony over mass media and popular culture is even more dangerous. It's what enables them to manufacture consent to implement their (sometimes) wicked plans. They instill their views and stories in the public mind by repetition, just to exploit them later like what they did in Iraq invasion in 2003. So it's not about the past and 75 years ago.
Even today they do it by demonizing some countries like Iran, China and North Korea while portraying themselves as leader and saviors of the free world!!! All while they're the only country that has used atomic bombs against people (Thanks god they only had 2 atomic bombs at the time, unless it would be an even worse war crime.)

Maybe we can't completely prevent wars on earth but (at least) we can and should prevent the use of nuclear weapons and atomic bombs which has no use but to spread war to non-military targets and kill thousands of civilians far from war front lines.

I wouldn't draw any conclusions about western society from something like HBO, a private entertainment company.  It's like drawing conclusions from a Disney movie.  

I lived near a similar graphite reactor at the time.  We only hoped that there are specialists who understand what went wrong and it won't happen again anywhere.

As for west versus east information, are you referring to the trustworthiness of Chinese State news or something?  Worldwide skepticism for all is justified.

The Atom Bombs were not even the highest cause of casualties and Fatalities in Japan itself, in a country that made its homes from wood and paper, the firbombing campaign was devastating. For a very human portrayal of those fire bombings see Ghibli's Grave of the Fireflies.
