I still despise 10bit, but Commie's been releasing this more than CR has.

I used to think like you, until I updated my video codecs and bought a 14bit TV.

MPC on my laptop gives me a video lag, cause of ten-bit format. I have my video codecs up-to-date. I could watch this on my PC, but the MPC there is giving me audio trouble. Even connecting my laptop to my flatscreen tv still gives me a video lag.

Some things you can try:
- close background applications and services
- use the Overlay renderer in MPC (View > Options > Output > Overlay)
- disable H.264 deblocking (this will vary depending on what H.264 decoder you're using)

1. If you are using a 32-bit OS, like WinXP generally is:
KMP with fastest settings runs circles around MPC-HC with fastest settings.  In fact, it outperformed every other player in my own testings, especially on marginal hardware.  However, Hi10P is a bit of a quantum jump.  As a rule of thumb, if your hardware can play 1080p-8bit, it can probably play 720p-Hi10P using KMP.  Just look for and use the KMP "SuperSpeed" mode option.

2. If you are using a 64-bit OS, like Win7 often is:
Potplayer-64 bit version is the speed king, outperforming KMP-32bit by a large margin.  Or you could try MPC-HC 64bit edition, available at the MPC website.

The best place to begin looking for any of these products is downloads.cnet.com

Hi10P: Best thing since Betamax video tape.  Probably similar future.

John, I'd like to add a bit.  Given the lag you describe, I don't know if any video player or setttings will be enough, so consider another option: upgrade.  Fansub anime is more than ever a perishable product.  --You can't go back and get something later anymore.  So consider investing in hardware that will allow you to select and enjoy the best fansub you can find right now without having to worry about format.  The tech people responsible for h264 specifically recommend Sandy Bridge (and therefore also now Ivy Bridge) hardware as it has built in decoding aids for rendering h264.  The lowest end of this tech would be an i3 notebook.  With 4GB memory, Win7 or 8 and a good video player it will play all 720p-Hi10P and almost all 1080p-Hi10P -with a little stuttering during OPs and ENs in 1080p.  No other video processing aids required.  If you want a specific recommendation, I'd go with the Fujitsu Lifebook AH532 because it has all the other forward looking technologies: 3 USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, Bluetooth, Intel Wi-Di, expansion card slot, and room for 32GB of memory.  And where I am it has a rebate and low sale prices.  The company in fact reported poor earnings for the last quarter because they'e giving away too much value.  I bought one a few months ago for the same reason I'm recommending to you, so I could forget about formats.

Finally, from the other side of the abyss, let me assure you that Hi10P is the most overhyped and disappointing thing ever.  I still download 8-bit when I have the choice, because I don't know that Hi10P will be around in 10 years.  No audience outside of our little world of anime has much interest in it because the gains are trivial and the overhead costs are huge.  The h264 720p-8bit encode will go down in history as a work of genius because it allowed otherwise crappy hardware to play HD video, creating a new mass market.  Throwing fansub anime fans under the bus for the sake of the marginal improvement of Hi10P was one of the stupidest things ever.  And those responsible are reaping the reward: mp4 and other re-encodes popping up all over, causing Commie's head to yell in the Nyaa chatbox last week: "Everybody --stop re-encoding anime!!!"

Just wanted to point out some things:
- The QuickSync decoder introduced in the Intel Sandy Bridge line does not decode 10-bit, or, to my knowledge, has any particular special hardware dedicated to decoding any part of 10-bit H.264
- It's expected that software developers will always recommend the fastest processor, even if it's far overkill
- I find it unlikely that support for a codec will "disappear" in the foreseeable future; even in the rare case that it gets removed from the LAV/ffmpeg libraries, you can always fall back to older applications. You may think that you only see 10-bit in anime fansubbing, however it does somewhat have uses in professional video authoring, for example. One thing that I think is probable is that we will never see a consumer grade hardware 10-bit decoder, so it's unlikely there'll be much more support for the format than there already is.

Have you tried viewing the format with VLC media player. The lastest version can handle 10 bit and it also uses it's own decoder. I can play 720p with no issues and 1080p with the odd lag on scenes with fast pans when playing the files from my USB drive. VLC is freeware.
