the media files themselves i downloaded then self-extracted chapters using gmkvextractgui and mkvcleaver for comparison. in all cases the chapter files opened fine with mkvtoolnix-gui and they didn't have dummy element entry.
I talked to the owner of Anirena and this is what he said:
"If I know what IP range they are connecting with, I could check if they got hit by a IP block, I had a lot of torrents non-Asian being posted on AniRena, and I block these ranges from uploading. When they can provide the IP range they use to scrape, I can put them in a whitelist. It might be for them not a reason, for me it is. If their IP is situated in the IP range a spammer was active with, then they were collateral damage so to speak."

SubsPlease is a single user who had zero connection with HorribleSubs or any other rip/fansub group. He's someone who had been doing his own rips for years for personal use and when HorribleSubs folded he decided to step up and supply his rips.

ie. posturing. They sent a letter in September, posturing and demanding that the site be shut down. And the letter was thrown in the bin. My takeaway from this is that torrentfreak.com is bogus
